Introduction to Polyphonic Midi ring tones and SP Midi
Polyphonic Ringtones
What exactly is a polyphonic ring tone ? The answer is very simple, a polyphonic
tone is a name given to a ringtone on a mobile that can play more than one note
at a time (chords). The number of notes and even instruments differ from mobile
to mobile. The majority of polyphonic tones are created either in a General Midi
format or in a more advanced format known as SP - Midi. The creation of these
files can be carried out with some specialised software. I have included a
section on creating your own polyphonic tones and coding your own wap site using
WML (Wireless Markup Language).
Scalable Polyphony MIDI Specification (SP-MIDI)
What is Scalable Polyphony MIDI ? SP MIDI allows composers to indicate how MIDI
data should be performed by devices with different polyphony capabilities. For
example, a SP MIDI composition that has been written for mobile device that has
16 note polyphony, could also be made to play on a mobile device that has
perhaps only 8 note polyphony devices, by eliminating certain instrument parts,
chosen in advance by the composer.
For mobile applications, SP-MIDI MIDI provides flexibility to both the system
operator and the mobile terminal manufacturer to address differing customer
needs. Lower-cost phones with a lower note polyphony may be offered the same
content that will play on devices with a higher note polyphony.
SP MIDI has a clear advantage over conventional 'note stealing' methods. With
note stealing, some notes are terminated or not played at all, based on the
capabilities of the playback device instead of the content creator's
instructions. If a standard 6 channel midi composition is played over a device
that supports only 4 channels (4 note polyphony), this will inevitably produce
strange and unprofessional variations of the original song. This often results
in the song becoming unrecognisable. SP-MIDI changes this and allows the content
author to decide in advance which musical lines will be played in different
polyphony situations.
Many of the newer mobiles now available can handle 16 note polyphonic
compositions and have access to the full GM standard instrument range. However,
even with a mere 4 note polyphonic mobile such as a Nokia 3510 you can create
some spectacular results. The Nokia 3510 is very restricted in the fact that it
only has 29 of the 128 available instruments and 14 percussion effects. The way
most Nokia's handle this limitation is by utilising a mapping method. For
instance, if a composition called for a 'Hony Tonk' piano, this would then be
substituted with an 'Acoustic Grand Piano' as this is the only piano type
instrument available.
